Role of Parents in building Emotional Intelligence in children

Apart from school and other infrastructures, parents have a very important role in the development of a child. The relationship between a child and a parent plays a very important role in how they perform, behave and act in a social set up. Some tips that can be followed by parents to build emotional intelligence in children are shared below:

1. Let your child express his/her emotions. Do not repress their feelings

Let your child express incidents related to his day to day life with you. Encourage your child to express the feelings they have after an overwhelming sad or happy incident. Ex.: Your child may come home and tell you that his friend’s birthday party is cancelled due to the sudden rise of a viral infection in the town. In such a case ask your child to describe how he/she felt? They may say disappointed, sad, furious and many more. But don’t immediately judge their feelings, let them express their feelings.

2. Talk about your own emotions with your child

Instead of always expecting your child to speak to you, at times you may share your experiences with your child. Based on the experiences, the emotions you felt may be discussed with children. Let the communication be two way. Ex: In your company your boss scolded you and you are feeling low, sad and disappointed. You may share this incident with your child and express how you feel.

3. Acknowledge your child’s perspective:

Understand your child’s point of you and do not straight away label them as good or bad. Don’t try to judge their emotions. Respect their individual point of view. Allow them to take decisions for them. Ex.: Let them choose how they want to dress up, the subjects they want to choose, art or sports they want to practice or play respectively.

4. Express your love towards them as often as possible

Let your child know that you love him/her. Children follow what their elders do. Expressing feelings is a great way to relieve stress. It also builds strong relations and trust. Children will learn to express their positive feelings and will feel more emotionally secure. Such children have better mental health compared to others.

5. Play games

Children love playing games. But, what if the game also gives them a purpose to learn a new skill. Emotional Intelligence is a skill that can be learnt through play and activities. Parents can help children understand emotions and drive them to better handling of emotions through games and activities.
